Meeting the Tallest Nepali

Reporter's Notebook
Like all other things, height is also relative. I realised how short I am (5 feet 6 inches) when I met Nepal's tallest man Rajan Adhikari (7 feet 3 inches) last week. I was tracking him for a profile story that appeared in last week's Nepal Magazine.

That day, I had a rare visitor in my room: my sis and her husband. But, breaking the rules of hospitality, I took meal ahead of them and rushed to meet Rajan. Job is job, afterall.
This is story from my friend blogsite and recently he is working in the largest media house (Kantipur publication)of Nepal. If you wants to read all about this story log on to http://deepakadk.blogspot.com/

Nepalese won the prize in Berlin!

On 30th september Manjushree Thapa won the prize in Berlin!
for her Manjushree Thapa, Nepal: Forget Kathmandu: An Elegy for Democracy, Penguin Viking India, New Delhi, 2005

Last night, Saturday 30th September, at an award ceremony in Berlin, with 500 international guests from the world of literature, art, culture, media, politics and diplomacy, the jury of the Lettre Ulysses Award, a prize initiated by the cultural journal Lettre International in association with the Aventis Foundation, and in partnership with the Goethe-Institut , meant to reward extraordinary "reportage literature", announced the winner of this year's awards.

The first prize of $50,000 and a trophy designed by the German artist Jakob Mattner were awarded to the British journalist and writer Linda Grant, for her book "The People on the Street. A Writer's View of Israel" .

Grant, a non-religious Diaspora Jew, travelled to Tel Aviv in 2003, with the intention of writing a novel. However, instead her visit becomes an opportunity for a systematic and in-depth exploration of Jewish identity and its relationship with the state of Israel.

Her book is a journey through an extraordinary and troubled society determined to defend its existence, and ensnared in a conflict that seems to promise few peaceful prospects, through the languages and biographies of its inhabitants, their archetypes and histories, their doubts and their hopes. The people she meets include teenage soldiers, Tunisian-born settlers, Russian scientists and Iraqi shopkeepers, kibbutz dwellers and street traders, writers and taxi drivers, caf¨¦ owners and pedestrians.
The other finalists, listed below, received prizes in the form of a working residencies in Berlin, endowed by the Goethe-Institut, and valuable handmade watches by the company Nomos.

Tuesday

information received from a reliable diplomatic source

in Nepal, one "Bandit " replaces another "Dacoit" when the regime
changes. We were very happy to have Jana Andolan II to have
succeded and expected that good people will be appointed as
Ambassador. I came to know from a reliable source that Mr. Navin
Prakash Jung Shah is going to be appointed next Ambssador to Paris. So
Navin is the brother in law of former army Chief Prajwalla samsher and Brother of Sindhu Rana.
And he was the most corrupt Vice Chancellor of TU who almost
dismantled TU during his time. He has very good relations with
Girirja. Girirja treats him like his son. You know the history how
Mr. Shaha's father was killed in 2018 in Chitwan and his mother
committed suicide.

Now what I want to say is he is always drunk otherwise he can
not even walk. He is the one who masterminded the "Division Scandal"
for Ambika Devi Luintel for Foreign affairs posting . DPM Oli has said that the list is already ready and he will
start the appointment when he comes back from New York in the first
week of October.

HAPPY DASHAIN TO ALL

Maoist Take Journalists Hostage

Human rights and media organizations have condemned the Maoist rebels for taking hostage half a dozen media persons and a human rights activist last week. According to Tuesday’s Kantipur daily, five journalists — Yagya Bikram Shahi and Kashi Ram Dangi of Kantipur daily, Sudhir Sharma of Himal Khabarpatrika, Rajaram Gautam and photojournalist Nischal Chapagain of Nepal fortnightly — and an INSEC representative from Rolpa were taken hostage for three days. They were traveling in the Maoist stronghold to cover news about the reported meeting of the Maoist politburo in the remote hilly district. They were released later. The father of Himal reporter Sudhir Sharma collapsed after reading the news about his son in eastern district of Jhapa Tuesday and passed away while undergoing treatment. Kantipur Sep. 11

"I Will Give Priority To Research Works"— Sumnima Singh

SUMNIMA SINGH made a history in the early morning of July 1, 2000 by becoming the highest scorer ever in the SLC exams. A 16-year-old girl, Singh was overjoyed to know she topped this year's SLC and that too with record 647 marks securing 92.43 %. Also interested in literature, Singh wants to become a scientist in future. A student who secured the first position in SLC result, wants to be a scientist. A student of Sidhartha Banasthali, Singh shared her joys with NISHCHAL CHAPAGAIN . Excerpts :

Did you think you would top the SLC?

I was confident that I would find a place in top ten list but I had no idea that I was going to top the list.

Two weeks before the publication of SLC results, your principal predicted that his student would become board first. How do you look at it?

I think his statement was based on his confidence in me. He is aware of my hard work and family background. The assessment of other teachers of my school could also have helped him make the statement. But I am disappointed at the manner in which many newspapers misinterpreted his good intention.

How could he particularly point out your name when there were so many other competent students?

I told you that it was his confidence in my hard work. There is nothing more than that.

A girl who had featured in the top ten list of last year's SLC is said to have failed in one subject in campus. Doesn't this indicate there is something wrong in the whole system of SLC ranking?

I don't know about her case but I will prove my efficiency.

It is charged that irregularities are rampant in SLC board. What is your impression on that?

I don't think that there are irregularities in SLC board. Such problems may happen because there is vast gap in SLC course and higher education. The background of SLC alone is not enough to complete higher education. What is required is further labor. I will work harder in the higher education level.

How do you see the decision of SLC board to retain only two places in the board this year?

I don't agree with the step taken by the government. Board system is based on competition and not on corruption and irregularities. I think they should encourage competition among the students of different parts of the country. There is no rationale behind the decision to do away with the board system. If there are any bad practices, they should correct it. Canceling the total system of publishing top ten list will discourage competition among students. Take my case, I had prepared for last so many years to achieve this feat.

What do you want to be in future?

I will pursue with science. I will definitely give priority to research work. I also want to take up literature along with my study. In the next 25 years, I want to do something fruitful in the sector of science and technology.
